TV Review: ‘What We Do In The Shadows’ Season 5; Episode 3

by Frank Martin

What We Do In The Shadows continues to succeed on two separate fronts. It tells a long form narrative while also dealing with hilarious vampire antics. There’s so much mythology surrounding the world of vampires that, sometimes, it’s hard to sift through it all. Different stories have different rules that vampires need to follow. It’s become so muddled that it’s hard to know what’s fact and what’s fiction within a given universe. What We Do In The Shadows plays with this notion hilariously. This season has been especially good at toying with this idea as Guillermo (Harvey Guillén) is stuck in his transition from human to vampire.

Like most, this week’s episode had several different story threads going on at once. Nadja (Natasia Demetriou) gave her doll power over her body so that this part of her soul could finally lose her virginity. It did not go as planned. Laszlo (Matt Berry) used science to figure out what’s going on with Guillermo, which caused Nandor (Kayvan Novak) to become insanely jealous. In an attempt to impress Guillermo, Nandor tried to fly to space. He ended up crashing back down to the planet during a gay pride parade the other vampires were hosting for a friend running for office.

The dynamic between Laszlo and Guillermo trying to figure out what happened to him is the driving force behind the episode. That doesn’t mean that Nandor’s and Nadja’s own shenanigans aren’t funny, but they aren’t the main narrative. Laszlo even used Guillermo’s sweat to get himself out into the sunshine, a pretty big deal for a centuries-old vampire that hadn’t see the sun in ages. There’s still a lot more to uncover with Guillermo’s mystery, but every episode offers a little bit more insight into the situation. It will be interesting to see how it develops as the season goes on.

What We Do In The Shadows streams Fridays on Hulu.
